NEDERBURG
BACK TO DISTELL WINES (Alcohol)
Nederburg is South Africa’s most-awarded winery with more prizes, trophies and medals earned on local and international shows than any other producer in South Africa. Its cellars are equipped to make a varied and exciting portfolio of specialty and popular wines. The winery is situated in Paarl, one of the most beautiful locations in the Cape Winelands, with an historic homestead and very contemporary tasting facilities, a restaurant called The Red Table, generous gardens, a cellar and a host of entertainment for visitors.
Nederburg Background
Tradition and talent blend with passion, precision and patience at Nederburg, where classically structured wines are made with vibrant fruit flavours. Nederburg’s hallmark combination of fruit and finesse continues to be rewarded around the world. The Paarl winery has earned five-star ratings for three wines in the both the 2013 and 2012 editions of Platter’s South African Wine Guide. In 2011, Nederburg was chosen as Platter’s Winery of the Year, with an unprecedented five wines across the multi-tiered range earning five-star ratings. In addition, cellarmaster Razvan Macici was crowned the 2012 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year and the winery itself announced the South African Producer of the Year the 2012 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC). These are just some of the many accolades earned by Nederburg where hand-crafted, micro-cuvées for specialist winelovers and beautifully balanced and accessible wines for everyday enjoyment are made with equal commitment.
Nederburg’s cellarmaster, Razvan Macici, is supported by two winemakers who work closely under his direction. They are Wilhelm Pienaar, who produces the red wines and Wim Truter, who makes the whites.
The first vineyards were planted on Nederburg not long after Philippus Wolvaart, a German immigrant, established the farm in 1791. The beautiful manor house, a national monument and a proud example of Cape Dutch architecture, soon followed in 1800.
Nederburg wines are exported to key global markets where it is steadily building a presence and reputation for classically styled wines with fruit-rich flavours. Its growing success as a global lifestyle brand is built on an extensive infrastructure that includes ongoing viticultural research, the implementation of pioneering vineyard practices, sourcing of top-quality grapes; major investments in cellar facilities and an international marketing and distribution network.
“We don’t make wines to win awards,” says Nederburg cellarmaster Razvan Macici, who has continued the prize-winning legacy of luminary predecessors such as Günter Brözel and Johann Graue. “Just like in the days of Philippus Wolvaart and those who followed after him, we make wines to please people’s palates - for the sheer enjoyment of good taste. That has always been Nederburg’s focus and it is built on the premise that you need the best quality fruit to make the best quality wine.”
