Johannesburg - The number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy rose by about 7 000‚ or 0.1%‚ in the first quarter of 2013‚ the March Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey released by Statistics SA on Tuesday shows. 

This took the number of employed in the formal non-agricultural sector to an estimated 8.463-million in the first quarter‚ from an estimated 8.456-million in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The survey showed that gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended March (January to March) amounted to R377.2bn‚ reflecting a quarterly decrease of R15.2bn‚ or 3.9%‚ compared with the quarter ended December.

The estimated 8.463-million people employed reflected an annual increase of about 80 000 employees‚ or 1.0%‚ compared with March 2012‚ when there were an estimated 8.383-million employees. From Fin24.com
