Kids do, and say, the darndest things – this was the basis of First Choice’s recent competition, “I Kid You Not”. This story-sharing platform offered moms and dads an opportunity to share the, often seemingly impossible, moments experienced with their kids. Hundreds of entries were received and one lucky winner will be creating priceless memories with her family during a fully inclusive seven day trip to the USA to visit Disneyland in Orlando.
Eastern Cape resident Theresa Isaac was named as the winner and she and her two children, Oscar and Maya will travel to the United States in April 2014. Theresa’s winning story involved both her children: “I was at a restaurant one evening with my two little children and a bunch of friends. When getting bored, the kids asked if they could go and listen to music in the car which was parked right outside the front door.
bored, the kids asked if they could go and listen to music in the car which was parked right outside the front door. After about 10 minutes another patron came to me and said: "You'd better come outside".... with that sinking feeling, I went out and saw a cheering crowd gathered around my car; Michael Jackson blaring. Pushing my way through the crowd, I saw my normally very shy 8-year-old doing his Michael Jackson moves; his 7 year old sister was the DJ. I also noticed a hat on the ground – the little guy had managed to raise about R24 before I got there.
One of the people at the restaurant was a teacher from the school - he was so impressed he asked me if my son could do his thing at the school Talent Show. He was too young to enter the competition, but he wanted him to be the Special Guest. So a few weeks later he went onto the talent show - and was the Star of the Show.
Theresa says that Oscar and Maya have asked her not to tell them about what they can see at Disneyworld - they want it all to be a surprise! The family found out about their win while at a school party and the kids had a lot of fun sharing their celebrations with friends. “I am so looking forward to experiencing everything at Disneyworld with the kids; I would never have been able to treat them to a holiday like this without this wonderful opportunity,” said Theresa.
Oscar and Maya both love sea creatures and their favourite colours tie in with this – Oscar’s is green while Maya’s favourite colour is turquoise. Oscar’s favourite artist is Michael Jackson while Maya’s favourite is Selena Gomez. Asked if she enjoys dancing, Maya said that she prefers to sing and will be taking part in the school’s talent show next year.
Parents were allowed to enter one story; however the First Choice Facebook page enjoyed a high level of engagement with many sharing additional stories on the wall. One story involved a fishing trip where a little one loudly asked his mom for “hookers, lots of hookers” when referring to fishing hooks. Another asked if fish have fingers – on hearing the answer, he proceeded to ask, “Where do fish fingers come from then?”
Part of the competition element included the association of kids to their favourite Moo Kid character – each of the five Flavoured Milk flavours have specific characters. Each flavour depicts a character: chocolate flavour is Brown Cow, a broad-chested beast and self-proclaimed beefcake who enjoys pushing over tractors, operating heavy equipment and bench pressing the troughs as part of a morning routine; strawberry is the Pink Cow – a pampered princess who loves to cuddle and enjoys all the girly gossip in the meadows. Cola Cow is the chef with pizazz who enjoys serving the most delicious grub for the other cows on the block, while Green Cow’s cream soda flavour encourages mischief and silly giggles. Blu Cow gives the kids the bubblegum flavour without the Bubblegum mess for mom’s to clean up.
The I Kid You Not competition ran from August to October this year and First Choice hopes to host a similar competition on an annual basis.
