ABBA SEAFOOD
BACK TO ABBA SEAFOOD (Food & Beverage)
Abba Seafood is the market leading Scandinavian seafood brand, with strong traditions in quality and excellence dating back to 1838.
Driven by a passion for flavour and a genuine desire to help people enjoy the great taste of high quality seafood, Abba’s core team of 350 employees leverage its annual turnover of EUR 140 million to distribute its products in 30 countries world-wide.
Sweden is Abba’s home turf where it enjoys the wolf’s share of the market in the herrings, caviars and anchovy categories. 80% of its seafood turnover is generated in this market.
Sustainability is an integral part of everyday at Abba Seafood. This specific roadmap involves increased use of fishing gears and methods that maximize the prevention of unnecessary by-catch (species and size). Abba’s range of herring-derived products are also the first of such products to carry the MSC ecolabel (Marine Stewardship Council). This green philosophy is ingrained even in the production processes where natural resources such as water and energy are used wisely, with on-going work continuously striving towards reducing energy consumption and the amount of waste created. Another good example is the use of biological waste in the production of biogas for several years.
Abba also works closely with KRAV, a key player in the organic market in Sweden since 1985. The KRAV label stands for: (1) sound, natural environment, (2) solid care for animals, (3) good health and (4) social responsibility.
Abba Seafood’s name precedes that of the famous Swedish pop band ABBA, whose members (Agneta, Björn, Benny and Anne-Frid) approached the company (before the band had its breakthrough in 1974) regarding the use of the famous name. Per Brolund, then Director of Human Resources, gave his permission on behalf of the company, though he said “the youngsters had to behave and were not to harm the good reputation of Abba”. Looking back at the past one can say that the similarity of the names has become a benefit and delight for both Abba and ABBA.
Since 1995, Abba Seafood has been part of the Norwegian group Orkla ASA.
Orkla is one of Norway’s oldest business conglomerates. The company’s history dates back over 350 years and started out as purely a mining company extracting the rich ore deposits in Norway. Today Orkla is the leading branded goods company in the Nordic region. At present, Orkla operates in the branded goods, aluminium solutions and financial investment sectors. The company’s strategic focus is on growth in its branded goods operations.
The Group has 30 000 employees in more than 40 countries and a turnover of NOK 61 billion (~EUR 8.3bn).
