Speeding up delivery of product to shelf
To meet the needs of today’s South African grocery shopper, advanced mobility systems are needed in order to provide fresh, quality products on demand. Although the consumer rarely sees these processes first-hand, they are essential for streamlining the distribution process and speeding up the delivery of product to shelf.
While many of these processes have been done manually in the past, automating them can save a considerable amount of time, reduce human error and improve efficiencies when implemented properly.
For example, processes, such as ”automated decorative label application on average increases processed volumes (by as much as 10 times), as opposed to manual application, with additional benefits like increased quality and accuracy,” says Raymond Grieger, Business Development Manager for Mobility Solutions at Zetes South Africa.
Apart from price, improving supply chain efficiency will become the common denominator for retail’s success. Included in this is implementing other automations, like print and apply applicators (in-line variable printing) and ink jet or laser coding, among others.
But, retailers not only have to impress consumers with speedy delivery, they are also required to comply with GS1 standards related to barcoding and product traceability.
“With automated marking, coding and labelling, this allows [manufacturers] to easily adhere to current requirements and to possible future changes,” comments Francois Kotze, Business Development Manager for Automated Marking, Coding and Labelling at Zetes South Africa.”
All of these processes can be combined with supply chain fundamentals, like warehousing and distribution, in streamlining the distribution process.
These savings in time and improved accuracy in automation can also translate into cost reductions for the consumer, which will be greatly welcomed in light of the volatile petrol price and anticipated food inflation.
